MAD RIVER - JERSEY SLOO - 12” & Book. This seems to have been a year in the making. A labour of love for Nigel Cross and Shagrat records. Mad River were a sixties psych band in California. They made two LPs, the first of which I bought and loved at the time. This 12” uses unheard tracks and versions of some favourites. I was really excited to have a chance to do the artwork. I did the front and back of the sleeve, the front and back of the book and the labels of vinyl. The book front was my original idea for the cover of the disc.

Then my second idea (cartoon style truck and driver based on the words of the lead track) was used for the A side of the disc.

My third design was the one used for the cover using an old and very rare photo of the group in their heyday with my lettering and design.  The back of the disc is the same photo messed around with. I had to get Jonathan Hill to help me do the text on the back of the sleeve on his giant computer.

The design for the back of the book was inspired by Richard Brautigan’s “Trout Fishing in America”. He was a great friend of the band back in the day. I’d never read the book before and loved it so the painting is very inspired by the book.
